* you gonna dream - feat. byron stingily*, from french producer who and the vocal from byron stingily itself of his *it’s over* released on nervous records 1998. the wonderful tracks comes in two distinct versions: the first mix works off skipping percussion, a warm round sub bassline and uplifting vocals full of hope, love and joy. on the flip the * club mix* adds a tougher edge, taking us straight on to the dance floor of a new york basement club circa 1994, while the vocal (feat byron stingily from nervous record) keeps the bright and upbeat.

stix records is a sub-division of favorite recordings, recently launched with a first official single by taggy matcher birdy & nixon (stix033), who pleased us with two reggae-rocksteady renditions of the famous black keys. precisely specialized in the exercise of producing covers with a reggae twist, the new label presents his first album entitled *disco reggae*. many artists faithful to the stable of favorite recordings and its various sub-labels are invited for the occasion: the dynamics, blundetto, grandmagneto, 7 samurai, john milk or taggy matcher. all came and brought their respective touch to this first compilation, with among other things some of the rarest titles from their big single records’ years, but also 4 new and exclusive productions. each of them delivers a great disco-reggae version of classic hits by some artists as diverse as madonna, herbie hancock, justin timberlake, the commodores, the o jays, curtis mayfield, harry nilsson or sugarhill gang. whatever the genre or the period, nothing can resist their inventiveness and creativity, to the point sometimes we confuse between originals and covers. everything is remastered and cut at carvery records (uk), known for their expertise in caribbean and disco music. the vinyl lp comes in a deluxe version, housed in an old-school tip-on jacket.

part two of the a made up sound 007/008 double drop. killer pan-around beats and morsecode-like pads build towards sonic mayhem on the a-side, while the b-side sees the highly anticipated half hour jam on a borrowed synth finally get its release.

flangers opens with the dark, gravelly, brooding, and heads down techno of the title track - a lengthy, spacious workout which manages still to cut a deep groove despite it s direct driving force. similarly, beast paces itself, slowly unfolding all of its treasures as it grows, swells and shapeshifts over the course of just over five minutes of sustained tension. on the flip, two heavyweight producers step up to the remix: germany s markus suckut and dutch producer, jeroen search. suckut s interpretation of flangers keeps much of the understated groove and tension of the original whilst dipping it in a more shrouded cloak of murky techno. jeroen search on the other hand pitches up the pace with a crisp, high-hat driven dive into the deep

we dig deep into trax s vaults to unearth some unreleased super rare versions of some trax classics. vol. 1 contains two ron hardy reel to reel edit s of jamie principle & frankie knuckles classics -bad boy- and -baby wants to ride-. very different to the final released versions these are personal edits ron made to play at the music box, chicago in the mid-late 80 s. released in conjunction with trax 2015.

last year s disco (a fine selection of independent disco, modern soul & boogie 1978-82) compilation from soul jazz offered undeniable proof that few diggers deserve their reputation as much as dutch discotheque scholar disco patrick. given the reception, it s no surprise to see that the london label have commissioned patrick to undertake a second assessment of the genre s lesser known gems with the focus here on the years 1976-80. the first of two double lp vinyl samplers to accompany the full cd release finds pat pulling out gems like the extremely pricey skip jackson curio micro wave boogie and t.k. disco treat cosmic funk by mad dog fire department.

north lake is a fairly established name in the leftfield techno scene and each release he puts out leaves his listeners constantly looking forward to much more. the prolific and elusive michigan-based artist has a rich repertoire of previous releases and contributions on exemplary record labels such as permanent vacation, life and death, ellum or phonica.
